It is not a secret that the name "first wedding night" is more theoretic than practical name and it has nothing to do with the real state of thing nowadays. Though, this name was never the true name and in most cases ancient people never had the first wedding night, though the reasons for it were way different from those common today for people.
So, the first reason for why people never consummated their marriage on the first night after the wedding is the religious reason. According to religious rules the first three nights after the wedding are night dedicated to gods. And that is why there is no way for just married people to consummate their marriage during the three first nights after their wedding.
And there are nations who believed that during some time spouses had to sleep together in one bed without having sex and it was like a test for them. With these actions they had to prove that they are more of mental connection than of physical. The weirdest reason for the special night is the right of the first wedding night.
It is when a husband has no right for defloration of his wife but he is the chief or another mighty person who has to be the first man in her life. It is the weirdest and the most terrible reason that died in XXVIth century.
